What is ROI?

ROI stands for Return on Investment. It measures how much profit or loss an investment generated relative to the total amount invested.

ROI is commonly used to compare investments, business projects, marketing campaigns, equipment purchases, property improvements, and other financial decisions.

ROI Formula

ROI = (Net Profit ÷ Total Investment) × 100

Net Profit = Final Value − Initial Investment − Additional Costs

Net Profit

The amount remaining after subtracting all included investment costs from the final value.

ROI Percentage

Shows the investment gain or loss as a percentage of total investment cost.

Investment Multiple

Compares the final value with the amount invested, such as 1.50× or 2.00×.

ROI calculation example

Suppose you invest $10,000 and later sell or value the investment at $15,000. If you also paid $500 in fees or other costs, your total investment cost would be $10,500.

Initial Investment: $10,000
Additional Costs: $500
Total Investment: $10,500
Final Value: $15,000
Net Profit: $4,500
ROI: approximately 42.86%

What is annualized ROI?

Standard ROI measures the total percentage return without considering how long the investment was held. Annualized ROI converts that result into an approximate compounded yearly return.

This can be useful when comparing investments with different holding periods. For example, a 30% return earned over one year is very different from a 30% return earned over ten years.

Annualized ROI is most useful when time matters

What can an ROI calculator be used for?

Business Investments

Compare the cost and financial outcome of equipment, technology, expansion, or other business projects.

Marketing Campaigns

Compare campaign-related costs with the financial value generated from the investment.

Real Estate Projects

Estimate return after purchase costs, improvements, and other included expenses.

Financial Investments

Compare initial capital with ending value and relevant transaction costs.

ROI vs. ROAS

ROI measures profit relative to total investment cost. ROAS, or Return on Ad Spend, specifically compares advertising revenue with advertising spend.

For marketing analysis, ROI can include broader business costs, while ROAS focuses more narrowly on advertising efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate ROI?

Subtract the total investment cost from the final investment value to calculate net profit. Divide that profit by the total investment cost and multiply by 100.

What does a 50% ROI mean?

A 50% ROI means the calculated profit is equal to 50% of the amount invested. For example, a $10,000 investment with $5,000 in net profit has a 50% ROI.

Can ROI be negative?

Yes. A negative ROI indicates that the investment's final value is lower than the total amount invested.

What costs should I include in ROI?

Depending on the purpose of your analysis, you may want to include transaction fees, commissions, installation costs, advertising expenses, renovation costs, or other directly related investment expenses.

What is the difference between ROI and annualized ROI?

ROI measures the total return over the entire investment. Annualized ROI estimates the compounded return per year over the investment period.

Does ROI include taxes?

Not automatically. If taxes are relevant to your analysis, you would need to account for them separately or include applicable costs in your inputs.
