Example

A $100 item with 20% off costs $80. If you then apply an additional 10% discount, the price becomes $72.

How to calculate a discount

To calculate a discount, multiply the original price by the discount rate divided by 100. This gives you the amount you save.

Subtract the discount amount from the original price to find the discounted price.

Discount Amount = Original Price × (Discount Rate ÷ 100)

Final Price = Original Price − Discount Amount

How stacked discounts work

Stacked discounts are applied one after another. The second discount is usually calculated from the already reduced price, not from the original price.

For example, a $100 item with 20% off becomes $80. If another 10% discount is then applied, 10% of $80 is $8, making the final price $72.

Original Price: $100
First Discount: 20%
Price After First Discount: $80
Additional Discount: 10%
Final Price: $72
Effective Discount: 28%

Discount and sales tax

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a 25% discount manually?

To find 25% off a price, multiply the original price by 0.25 to find your savings. For example, 25% of $100 is $25, so the final price is $75.

What does "stacked discounts" mean?

Stacked discounts are multiple discounts applied one after another. For example, 20% off followed by another 10% off reduces a $100 price to $72. The combined effective discount is 28%, not 30%.

Does the discount price include sales tax?

Not automatically. Sales tax can depend on your state and local jurisdiction, the type of product, and how a discount or coupon is treated. Enter a sales tax rate above if you want an estimated final price including tax.

How do I calculate two discounts?

Apply the first discount to the original price, then apply the second discount to the reduced price. For example, 20% off $100 gives $80, and another 10% off $80 gives a final price of $72.

Is 20% off plus 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount results in an effective discount of 28%. On a $100 item, the final price would be $72.

How much is 30% off $50?

A 30% discount on $50 saves you $15, making the final price $35 before any applicable sales tax.
